Banff, Alberta

Possibly the most beautiful place in Canada all-year-round.  Banff is a paradise for skiers, hikers, campers and golfers, but equally a wonderful destination for those who want to snuggle by a fireplace, peruse the many wonderful shops on Banff Avenue, or enjoy the many fabulous hotels, spas and restaurants in this charming town of only 5,000.  Wildlife abounds in the summer months.

What to see:

Banff was originally established because of the discovery of natural hot springs.  One can still tour the “cave and basin” where steaming hot water emerges from the ground, and a trip to Sulfur Mountain provides another opportunity to soak in the natural hot spring water.  Sulfur Mountain also offers a spectacular gondola trip (all year round) that will provide you with stunning vistas.  Banff Springs Hotel was built by the Canadian National Railway over 100 years ago.  It is a true ‘chateau’ and is one of the best hotels in the world (part of the Fairmont chain).  You will truly feel like you are in a castle.  The pool and spa are wonderful, and in summer, you can enjoy an outstanding golf course (with plenty of elk wandering around).  A short drive northwest of Banff is Johnson Canyon, which offers a variety of hikes (from very easy to a bit challenging) to several gorgeous waterfalls (a bit tricky in winter, but the frozen waterfalls are amazing).  A further 30 min up Highway 1 will bring you to Lake Louise — a beautiful lake with an impressive glacier as a backdrop.  Another Fairmont hotel is situated on the shore (Chateau Lake Louise).

Where to eat:

The Angels have a few favourites to recommend.  Le Beaujoulais, on the main street of Banff (Banff Ave) is a 5-star French restaurant that never disappoints.  There is a smaller, lovely Swiss restaurant at the opposite end of Banff Ave called “Ticino”, which we love.  Also, check out the restaurant at Buffalo Mountain Lodge – outstanding!

Where to stay:

The Banff Springs is outstanding!   Request a room with a view of the Bow River valley.  We also like the rustic charm of Buffalo Mountain Lodge — a large log cabin with a gorgeous, huge fireplace in the lobby – a great place to snuggle up on a cool evening.  Each room has its own wood-burning fireplace.  The Rimrock hotel is another good choice.
